Therefore, this topic still remains an area that could benefit by more archaeological discoveries, studies, and analysis. For example, the knives that have been found with blood on them have been assumed for use in autosacrifice, but not a lot of actual physical evidence has been found. ![]() In addition, a lot of the evidence that has been discovered that suggests these ritual practices is open to interpretation. A lot of the information regarding the Aztecs and their ritual practices, especially cannibalism due to its difficult nature to preserve evidence, comes from different codices written by the Spanish after they arrived in Mesoamerica. This was practiced mostly by the elites and the nobles, and involved eating the flesh of another human.Īlthough archaeological evidence has been found to support these ritual practices, including skull racks, flint knives, and obsidian blades, it was difficult for us to come across much more evidence than that. The last ritual practice that we explored in this blog was cannibalism, an act of thanks to the gods for the harvest. This was done using maguey plant spines or obsidian blades, among other sharp tools. We have seen how autosacrifice, or the letting of one’s own blood, was the most common daily ritual practice of the Aztecs. Much of the evidence for human sacrifice was found at the Aztec central precinct, the Templo Mayor, including a high number of skull racks showing the extent to which this ritual was practiced. As we have discussed, the Aztecs practiced human sacrifice on an unprecedented level, in order to reciprocate to the gods for giving them life and to keep the earth going. ![]() ![]() These rituals were highly practiced and spread throughout the Aztec empire as they conquered different areas. In this blog, we have explored some of the main Aztec ritual practices that characterized their culture: human sacrifice, autosacrifice, and cannibalism.
